AI flowcharts

Editing a flowchart by chatting with it

Instead of dragging shapes, you describe the change: "add a manager approval above €5,000", "send an SMS at the end", "rename Review to Credit review". The tool updates the structure of the chart, keeps the rest unchanged and saves a new version you can undo.

Why edit by chat

Generated charts are rarely perfect on the first try, and real processes change. Redrawing by hand is slow, and regenerating from scratch loses your previous corrections. Editing by instruction changes only what you ask for, because the request modifies the underlying model rather than the picture, as explained in how text-to-flowchart AI works.

Changes that work well

  • Add a step: "After the payment, send a receipt by email."
  • Add a branch: "If the amount is above €5,000, the manager must approve it first."
  • Add a wait: "On the No branch, wait 48 hours before sending a reminder."
  • Move a step: "Do the credit check before the sales review."
  • Rename: "Rename 'Review' to 'Credit review'."
  • Change ownership: "The back office, not sales, sends the contract."
  • Presentation: "Hide the swimlanes" or "Translate the labels to French."

Write precise requests

Refer to steps by their label, say where the change goes (before, after, on which branch), and say what happens next. "Add an approval" is ambiguous; "add a manager approval after 'Review request', and if refused, inform the customer and end" is not.

Versions and undo

In Flowchartio every change, whether from the chat, a rename or toggling lanes, creates an immutable version, and the changed steps are highlighted. If an edit is not what you meant, undo it and rephrase. That makes it safe to try ideas during a process improvement workshop.

When to regenerate instead

If the first chart is far from the process, for example the wrong owners or a missing half, it is faster to improve the description and generate again. The description template helps get it right the second time.

Finish with a review

After a series of edits, run the review checklist for AI-generated charts: every path ends, every loop has an exit, every step has an owner.

Open the editor and try a change.

Turn your process into a flowchart

Describe it in a few sentences. Flowchartio draws the flowchart, then you refine it in conversation.
