How to check an AI-generated flowchart

Compare the chart with your description sentence by sentence, then check structure (every path ends, every decision has labelled branches, every loop has an exit), ownership (each step in the right lane) and wording. Finish by walking a real case through it.

Typical AI errors

Generators are good at extracting what is written and weaker at what is implied. The most frequent problems are:

  • Missing exceptions that the description did not mention.
  • Merged steps: two actions combined into one box.
  • Invented steps that sound plausible but do not exist in your process.
  • Wrong owner, especially for decisions.
  • Generic labels such as "Process data".

The checklist

Completeness

  • Is every sentence of the description represented?
  • Is there anything in the chart that is not in the description? Remove it or confirm it.

Structure

  • Exactly one start, and every path reaches an end.
  • Each decision has at least two labelled branches that cover all cases.
  • Each loop has an exit (limit, timeout or escalation). See decisions and loops.

Ownership

  • Each step sits in the lane of whoever performs it.
  • Decisions belong to the person who decides.

Wording

  • Steps are verb + object; decisions are answerable questions.
  • Terminology matches what your team uses.

Walk through real cases

Take two or three recent real cases, including an unusual one, and trace them through the chart. If a case cannot be followed, a branch is missing. This is the same test as in the review of common flowchart mistakes, and it catches most problems in a few minutes.

Ask a colleague who did not write the description to do the walk-through: they will not fill the gaps from memory.

Fix in place

Correct the issues by asking for them, for example "split 'Check and approve' into two steps" or "move 'Approve discount' to the Sales manager lane", rather than starting over; see editing a flowchart by chat. If many things are wrong, improve the description and regenerate.

Responsibility stays with you

A flowchart that documents a procedure, a compliance process or software behaviour is a statement about how things work. The AI saves drawing time; the review is what makes the chart correct.
